Elisa Longo Borghini successfully defended her Giro d’Italia Women title after a hard-fought win. With this victory, the 33-year-old Italian becomes just the second rider from Italy to win the prestigious race more than once. She joined five-time champion Fabiana Luperini in the record books.
A two-time Olympic bronze medallist (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020), Borghini filled a 16-second general classification (GC) gap on the penultimate stage, a mountainous route from Fermignano to Monte Nerone on Saturday (July 12). Finishing second on the stage behind Australia’s Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance – Soudal), she launched a decisive uphill attack that gained over 30 seconds on race leader Marlen Reusser (Movistar), laying hands on the pink jersey with one day remaining.
Borghini returned to racing only in mid-April following injury setbacks. The Giro Donne win is set to boost her morale and confidence.
Germany’s Liane Lippert (Movistar) won the final sprint, outdoing four-time Giro champion Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx-Protime), who made a rare return to competitive racing. Reusser finished third, earning a 4-second time bonus.
