Griezmann was the hero for Atletico Madrid fans in the first half as the Frenchman scored twice to put Atletico Madrid on par with Liverpool. However, he was sent off in the second half for a high boot onto the head of Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino. Mohamed Salah scored a penalty late in the game to give Liverpool the lead and the Reds went home with all three points.
Liverpool had a quickfire start as Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the 8th minute of the game. Salah took the ball in the right-hand side of Atleti’s penalty box, drove to the center before unleashing a trademark shot. The shot took a bit of deflection off a defender and it was enough to beat Oblak.
Naby Keita doubled the lead for Klopp’s men in the 13th minute. The Guinean scored a stunning first-time volley, courtesy of a poor clearance from Hermoso.
However, Diego Simeone’s men are not known for giving up as Griezmann spurred on a comeback seven minutes after Keita’s goal. The Frenchman took a tidy touch off a fierce drive into the box from Koke. The first touch was enough to beat Allisson for Atleti’s first goal.
The World Cup winner scored the second of his night in the 34th minute to put Atleti level on terms. It was Griezmann’s third goal of the season since moving to Atletico Madrid from Barcelona.
Griezmann gets red
However, in the second half, Griezmann was sent off in the 52nd minute for a high boot on Roberto Firmino. He caught the Brazilian full-on the face with his boot. He received a straight red for the challenge.
Despite going down to 10 men, Atletico Madrid was still threatening the Liverpool defense. The famed defense was a shadow of themselves all night.
However, a penalty was awarded to Liverpool in the 78th minute of the match thanks to a blind challenge by Hermoso on Diego Jota.
Mohamed Salah converted the penalty to win the game for Liverpool. The 6 time European champions remain at the top with three wins from three games despite being placed in a tricky group along with AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, and Porto.
Mohamed Salah’s goals on the night meant that the Egyptian has now scored in 9 consecutive matches for Liverpool. This is the first time a Liverpool player has achieved this feat.
