As Grand Theft Auto 6 gets closer to its worldwide launch, a serious problem has appeared in Russia. Some government and religious leaders are asking for the game to be fully banned in the country. They believe the game includes content that goes against traditional values and could harm young players.
Rockstar Games is still preparing the title for a planned 2026 release, but if the ban moves forward, Russian players may not get official access to the game at all.
Why Russia Is Against GTA 6
Russia faces calls to ban GTA 6, as the deputy chairman of the World Russian People’s Council says:

The main voice behind this move is Mikhail Ivanov, who is the Deputy Chairman of the World Russian People’s Council. He has spoken strongly against the type of content that is expected to appear in the game.
Ivanov pointed to reports about adult scenes and entertainment elements, saying they break basic moral rules. He also shared concerns that such material could negatively affect children and teenagers who follow the Grand Theft Auto series closely.
He believes the game’s huge popularity makes it more powerful than people think. In his view, young players can be easily influenced by what they see in the game, even if age limits are in place.
Call for a Total Ban or Heavy Changes
Instead of simple age checks, Ivanov and his supporters want stronger action. They are pushing for one of two choices. The first option is a full ban on GTA 6 in Russia. This would stop the game from being sold or distributed in any form.
The second option is to force Rockstar Games to create a special version only for Russia. This version would remove all parts that are seen as offensive or against local values. Both options are being discussed, and no final decision has been made yet.
What Rockstar Games Is Doing Now
While this debate continues, the development team is still working on the game. Reports from gaming journalists say the main game content is already finished. Right now, the developers are focused on fixing bugs, improving performance, and making sure the game runs smoothly on all platforms before launch.
What This Means for Players
If the ban happens, Russian fans may need to find other ways to follow the game or wait for official news about a local version. This situation also shows how games can face different rules and reactions in different countries.
