If you’re a chess fan, or just chronically online, you must be aware of the little breakdown world number 1, Magnus Carlsen had during the Norway Chess 2025 after losing to the reigning world champion, Gukesh D. Fast forward to today, Gukesh had a similar reaction to a lose.
After two back-to-back defeats, the teenage world champion was clearly furious with himself, and stormed off the arena as disappointed fans watched in silence, almost sensing the shift in his forever calm and composed personality.
Grand Swiss 2025: A Nightmare For Gukesh D
So, Gukesh D is already eligible for the Candidates, thanks to his world champion title. This means he didn’t necessarily have to appear at the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025, but he did to “challenge” and prove himself. And to add the spice, Uzbek Grandmaster, Nodirbek Abdusattarov claimed that Gukesh will lose his title in 2026, making thinsg much more interesting.
Gukesh D started the tournament with a win, but suffered a huge loss in fifth round as he lost to Abhimanyu Mishra, who became the youngest Grandmaster to beat a world champion at the age of 16. Now, in round six, when he desperately needed a win, he lost to Nikolas Theodorou, after which he was seen storming off the arena in frustration.
Meanwhile for Theodorou, it was a good day. “Today I was hoping to be done earlier so I could play Titled Tuesday, but unfortunately I wasn’t able,” said Theodorou to FIDE after the game.
What’s Next?
So what happens now? Does Gukesh channel this frustration into a roaring comeback, Carlsen-style, or do we witness the start of another legend’s growing pains? That’s a drama worth watching, popcorn ready. One thing’s certain, chess isn’t just a game of moves and mind; it’s entertainment, personality, and unforgettable moments. Now all eyes are on Gukesh, will he bounce back or buckle under expectations?
