UN Chief Guterres Expresses Hope in Cricket Asia Cup’s Unifying Role
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres envisions the Cricket Asia Cup as a catalyst for uniting nations, as stated by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric on Monday.
When queried by a reporter about the impending tournament set to commence on Wednesday, Dujarric emphasized the powerful ability of sports to unite people, countries, and cultures. He specifically highlighted cricket’s capacity for such unification, stating that like football and rugby, cricket holds significant potential in this aspect.
The Cricket Asia Cup will feature six South Asian countries competing for the coveted trophy. The matches will unfold in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Of notable interest is the encounter between India and Pakistan, who possess limited channels for direct people-to-people interactions. The two teams will face off in Kandy, Sri Lanka, on Saturday, making this match a significant moment for bilateral sports diplomacy.
In a light-hearted manner, Dujarric, who has French-American origins, prefaced his statement by humorously acknowledging that cricket’s intricacies remain a mystery to many around the world. He admitted, “I love to watch cricket. I understand absolutely nothing about cricket.”
