HAM vs GLO: In an overwhelming performance at the Utilita Bowl, the Hampshire Hawks recorded their third consecutive victory of the 2025 Men’s Vitality Blast campaign, sweeping aside defending champions Gloucestershire in an emphatic HAM vs GLO encounter.
Inspired by John Turner’s blistering bowling and a career-best performance from Toby Albert, Hampshire coasted to a comfortable seven-wicket victory with five overs remaining.
On a pitch that produced more than 700 runs in an earlier double-header, Gloucestershire surprisingly decided to bat first but disintegrated under sustained pressure. John Turner laid the platform with an explosive new-ball performance, claiming Miles Hammond and Cameron Bancroft, the latter to a super catch by James Fuller at short fine leg.
Gloucestershire could muster only 37 runs during the powerplay, and mistimed shots and edges controlled the innings. The only resistance came from Ollie Price, who scored a scratchy 42 while wickets fell around him. The Hawks’ bowling attack shared the spoils:
John Turner: 3/28
Scott Currie: 2/19 (unhittable for the second game in succession)
Chris Wood & Benny Howell: 2 wickets each, conceding less than five runs per over
The Hawks’ fielding was of the highest order, taking all 10 wickets through catches, four pinpoint grabs by Howell in the covers, tying a Hampshire T20 record.
The title-holding champions could only make 119 all out on a reduced pace surface, failing to judge the ball. It was another disappointing performance in the GLO vs HAM rivalry, with Gloucestershire extending their losing run in T20s at the Utilita Bowl.
Pursuing a modest total, Toby Albert was the best batsman of the day. Maintaining his good form (following scores of 54 and 28*), Albert hammered a career-best 73 off 40 balls, consisting of four huge sixes and several classy shots.
He began Ajeet Singh Dale with two opening sixes, one of which was a 20-run over that shattered the back of the chase. Losing partners along the way, including Tom Prest and James Vince. Albert kept the scoreboard moving, taking his fifth T20 fifty with aplomb.
There was also a huge six off Dewald Brevis’s bat in the innings, while Albert appropriately completed the game with a classy pull shot for four.
Hampshire Hawks: Won three in a row for the first time since 2017
Gloucestershire: Remain unbeaten in 2025 and have never won a T20 at the Utilita Bowl
Man of the Match: Toby Albert – 73* (career-high)
Bowling Hero: John Turner – 3/28 in match-winning spell
With this resounding victory in the HAM vs GLO match, Hampshire Hawks have stamped their authority as title challengers early in the 2025 Vitality Blast. Gloucestershire, on the other hand, would have to pick itself up quickly to revive its stuttering campaign.
