Cronje was born on September 25, 1969, in Bloemfontein, South Africa, to Ewie Cronje and San-Marie Cronje. He earned a degree from Grey College in Bloemfontein, where he was the head boy, in 1987. He was an all-around athlete who demonstrated the then-Orange Free State Province in cricket and rugby at the school level. He captained his high school’s cricket and rugby teams. Cronje graduated from the University of the Free State with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He had a younger sister, Hester Parsons, and an older brother, Frans Cronje.
Cronje, then 18, constructed his first-class debut for Orange Free State against Transvaal in Johannesburg in January 1988. He was a regular the following season, making an appearance in all eight Currie Cup matches in addition to being part of the Benson and Hedges Series winning team, scoring 73 as an opening batsman in the final. Cronje was part of the West Indies tour following the World Cup; he played in three ODIs and made his Test debut in the following Test match at Bridgetown. South Africa’s first Test since readmission came within a whisker of defeating a strong West Indian side, but after starting the final day at 122/2 and chasing 200, they collapsed to 148.

Hansie Cronje Achievements
- In 1990-91, he was named Orange Free State captain and managed to score his first century against Natal in December. He completed the season with 715 runs at 39.72 mph.
- During the 1995-96 season, he was at his best, assisting Free State to a Currie Cup victory over Northern Transvaal.
- In 1993-94, he was the team’s vice-captain on a tour of Australia. Cronje helped South Africa defeat Australia in the first Test match of the triangular tournament between South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
- Cronje led his team to their first series victory in Pakistan to kick off the 1997-98 season. In the third test, he made a significant contribution by dismissing Moin Khan and Inzamam-ul-Haq.
- He managed to score 5 successive fifties against England in the 1998 test series. He managed to pass 3,000 runs in the second innings of his 50th test, becoming only the second South African player to do so. - Hansie Cronje was a fantastic athlete. He not only signified the Orange Free State Province in cricket and rugby at the school level, but he had also captained them.
- The match-fixing controversy started to turn him from a protagonist to an antagonist. It also brought an end to his international career. The United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) banned him for life in 2000 for his intervention in match-fixing.
- Hansie Cronje died in 2002, at the age of 32, when the plane he was in crashed into mountains.
- In 1995, Hansie Cronje married Bertha Hans. They never became parents. Bertha married Jacques Du Plessis in 2003, after Cronje died. The private ceremony was attended by Cronje’s family as well.
