Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and veteran PR Sreejesh have won the FIH Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year awards respectively for the year 2024. Both Harmanpreet and Sreejesh received this honor during the 49th FIH Congress in Oman last night. Harmanpreet beat Joep de Mol and Thierry Brinkman of the Netherlands, Germany’s Hannes Muller and England’s Jack Wallace to win the top award.
India won the Olympic medal under Harmanpreet Singh’s captaincy
Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh scored the most 10 goals in the Paris Olympics. Apart from scoring goals in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, he scored both the goals for India in the bronze medal match against Spain. India won the match 2-1 to secure a podium finish for the second consecutive time at the Olympics.
Sreejesh, who retired from the game after the Paris Olympics, overtook Pirmin Black of the Netherlands, Luis Calzado of Spain, Jean-Paul Deneburg of Germany, and Tomas Santiago of Argentina in the race to win the top award in the goalkeeper category.
Harmanpreet Singh had earlier won the FIH Player of the Year award in 2020-21 and 2021-22 as well, but the third honor is important because he has won it after winning the Olympic medal. This is his first honor as captain.
Harmanpreet said, ‘First of all, I thank FIH for this honor. It was wonderful to return home after winning a medal at the Olympics where a large number of people had come to welcome us. It was a very special feeling. I would like to mention my teammates here. None of this would have been possible without you.’
Sreejesh also became the winner for the third time
Sreejesh, who won two medals at the Olympics, also won the Best Goalkeeper of the Year award for the third time. Earlier he won this award in 2020-21 and 2021-22. Sreejesh said, ‘I am very happy today. Thank you for this last sports honor of my sports career. This award is entirely of my team, of the defense which ensured that most of the attacks did not reach me. This award is for the midfielders and forwards who have covered up my mistakes by scoring more goals than I have conceded.’
Other winners of FIH awards: Ybby Janssen of the Netherlands (Female Player of the Year), Ye Jiao of China (Female Goalkeeper of the Year), Sufiyan Khan of Pakistan (Male Rising Star of the Year), Joe Diaz of Argentina (Female Rising Player of the Year), Jeroen Delmy of the Netherlands (Male Coach of the Year), Alison Annan (Female Coach of the Year), Steve Rogers of Australia (Male Umpire of the Year), Sarah Wilson of Scotland (Female Umpire of the Year).
