Harshal Patel in 2021 was playing in a league of his own. In the 2021 season, Harshal Patel broke many bowling records. Patel took 30 wickets for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Here is a look at some of the statistics and records the Indian fast bowler broke during the season.
Harshal Patel has the joint-second most wickets by a bowler in a single edition of the IPL. His record of 30 wickets has only been bettered by Dwayne Bravo’s tally of 32 wickets for the Chennai Super Kings in the 2013 season. Kagiso Rabada also picked 30 wickets for Delhi Capitals during IPL 2020.
Death over specialist
Out of the 30 wickets, Harshal took 19 scalps at the death overs (17-20). Out of his 19 wickets, 11 came in the 20th over alone. His 19-wicket tally has only been bettered by IPL’s all-time death-over specialist, Dwayne Bravo. Surprisingly, Bravo has the most wickets in death overs in a season as well as the second most wicket in death overs in a season. Bravo took 21 wickets in death overs in 2015 and 20 in 2013.
Slower balls give fast returns
Harshal Patel took 18 off his 30 wickets off slower deliveries. His strike rate while bowling his change-up slower deliveries was just 6.67 meaning he was taking a wicket in less than 7 slower balls. But his stock faster deliveries could not get him a similar return as he bowled them at an economy of 9.46 RPO and took 12 wickets.
Master of the League stage
All of Harshal’s 30 wickets came in the league stage of the marquee tournament. His tally of 30 wickets in the league stage is the highest for anyone in the competition. Lasith Malinga previously held the record when he took 27 wickets in 2011.
Higher economy brings Harshal a forgettable record
Harshal for most of the season could do nothing wrong. But his economy rate was the highest for any bowler in IPL who took more than 25 wickets. Harshal’s economy was 8.40 RPO. An economy like this is considered to be well above average in IPL considering that he mostly bowled in the death-over phase of the innings.
Most instances of being on a hat-trick
Harshal during the season was on a hat trick on 5 occasions. He only managed to overcome the hurdle and take a hat-trick only once in a match against Mumbai Indians.
