Heather Knight Became London Spirit General Manager

4 Min Read

England batter Heather Knight has formally retired from playing in next year’s Hundred to take on the role, for the first time ever, of Women’s General Manager of London Spirit. This significant career move has hinted that the former England captain is possibly gearing up toward a gradual transition from full-time playing duties after the 2026 T20 World Cup to be held in England.

Responsibilities in Knight’s New Position

As General Manager, Heather Knight will offer technical insight to the coaching staff, while supporting on-field leaders from the dugout during matches. She will work closely with the Director of Cricket for London Spirit, Mo Bobat. Her appointment builds on experience gained in 2025, when she worked as a team mentor and coach during rehabilitation from a major hamstring injury.

Knight expressed her excitement, underlining she has “absolutely loved” her time with the franchise both as a player and part of the coaching setup.

Balancing England Duties With New Management Career

Heather Knight, however, does remain committed to playing for England and Somerset despite this new administrative role. Her ECB central contract is for another year as England also prepare to host a historic Women’s Test against India in July of 2026 at Lord’s. Knight said the opportunity allows her to learn from top cricket minds such as Bobat while expanding her off-field skills for the future.

Knight’s Legacy with London Spirit and Recent Comeback

In the first four seasons of The Hundred, London Spirit’s captain was Heather Knight; she led the team to a championship in 2024, then transitioned into a management role at the conclusion of the 2025 season after suffering a hamstring tendon tear while playing against the West Indies.

Although she lost the England captaincy earlier that year after a nine-year leadership tenure, Knight made a strong return, finishing as England’s top run-scorer at the Women’s World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. She scored 228 runs at an average of 48.00, helping England reach the semi-finals.

Academic Background and Future Career Direction

Heather Knight’s shift from international cricket to sports administration reflects her long-standing interest in that field. In 2023, Knight completed her Master’s program in Leadership in Sport at the Institute of Sports Humanities which was established by Ed Smith who was previously an England selector.

Her Master’s dissertation examined the tension between the long standing practice of playing internationally and this tremendous growth of domestic franchise leagues.

Franchise Reaction: A Healthy Asset for The Hundred

London Spirit’s Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, hailed Knight’s appointment and described her as “an asset in every sense”. He touted her vast knowledge of the women’s game and the fact that one of the leading current players in the world game has a strategic role with the franchise.

Bobat added that he looks forward to building a strong working partnership with Knight and supporting her long-term career goals while she continues contributing as an England player.
