He told about his decision by writing a long emotional post on Instagram. Klaasen said that it was not an easy decision for him to take, but it was necessary to spend more time with the family. He said “It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket. It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision but also one that I have absolute peace with.”

Klaasen expressed gratitude for the support, friendship and guidance he received in his international career. He also mentioned some coaches who kept faith in him during tough times. He said “I have made great friendships and relationships that I will treasure for life. Playing for the Proteas gave me the opportunity to meet great people that changed my life, and to those people I can’t say thank you enough. My road to wearing the Proteas shirt was different than most and there were certain coaches in my career that kept believing in me – to them I will always be grateful.”

Klaasen scored 2141 runs in 60 ODIs for South Africa, which includes 4 centuries and 11 fifties. His ODI average was 43.69. In T20I format, he scored 1000 runs in 58 matches and his strike rate was above 141. In Test cricket, he played 4 matches in which he scored 104 runs.
