Heavyweight boxer Sir Henry Cooper represented Great Britain. He competed in heavyweight championship matches for the British and Commonwealth for twelve years without losing, and he retained the title for three years. He knocked young Cassius Clay to the ground in a 1963 fight before the referee stopped it due to an eye cut. He faced Clay again in 1966, the reigning heavyweight champion, but lost once more due to an eye injury. After retiring in 1971 after a contentious loss against Joe Bugner, Cooper continued to enjoy popularity among the general public. Cooper was twice named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He is the only boxer from Great Britain to receive a knighthood.

  1. His was a family of middle status. While his father had served in the “Royal Army” and was also an amateur boxer who frequented the neighbourhood boxing club, his half-Irish grandfather was a horse merchant.
  2. Henry’s father enlisted in the military and left his family in 1942 to fight for his nation in Burma. As a result, Lily and her three sons were left on their own.
  3. Henry worked a variety of odd jobs after the war, including delivering papers and cutting wood.
  4. Henry was introduced to the “Bellingham Boxing Club” by one of his neighbours, who was a regular there. There, Henry started his training. He began playing casual games and picked up a few moves quite quickly.
