On Monday, April 17, Virat Kohli along with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will play in the IPL 2023. For the first time since 2019, RCB will play host to MS Dhoni’s CSK at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Over the years, Kohli has played a crucial role in the rivalry between RCB and CSK. He has significantly contributed to the Bangalore-based team’s victories over the Super Kings. Against Dhoni and company, he has scored an impressive 979 runs in 29 innings, averaging close to 40.
Virat Kohli against CSK
Kohli has nine half-centuries to his name in 29 innings against the Chennai Super Kings, and he’ll be aiming for ten on Monday. Here are the RCB player’s three finest performances against the Chennai franchise before he takes the pitch against the MS Dhoni-led team.
70* off 44 balls (IPL 2011- Qualifier 1)
At the Wankhede Stadium, CSK chose to bowl first after winning the toss. In-form Chris Gayle was quickly despatched by Ravichandran Ashwin, putting the remainder of the RCB hitters under strain.
In just 44 balls, Kohli stood up and produced for the team, scoring 70 runs. He entered the batting order when the team was 30/1 and remained unbeaten until the very finish, assisting RCB in achieving 175/4 in their allotted 20 overs.
In that game, the RCB star hit three sixes and five fours. He was unsuccessful, though, as Suresh Raina’s half-century helped CSK win by six wickets.
73 off 49 balls (IPL 2014)
In IPL 2014, Virat Kohli also played against the Chennai Super Kings and reached a half-century, but his team lost. At number four for the Royal Challengers Bangalore during a game at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Kohli made 73 runs off 49 deliveries.
In Bengaluru, Kohli delighted the crowd by smashing two fours and five sixes as RCB scored 154/6 in their 20 overs. However, CSK defeated Royal Challengers by eight wickets thanks to a half-century by Faf du Plessis and an unbeaten 49 off just 28 balls by MS Dhoni.
90* off 52 balls (IPL 2020)
In IPL games against the Chennai Super Kings, Virat Kohli has the best score of 90 not out, which he achieved off 52 balls in a league-stage match in 2020.
In his outstanding performance at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Kohli struck four fours and four sixes. Incredibly, he played that game and hit 50 runs by dashing between the wickets.
In 20 overs, Kohli’s unbeaten 90 helped RCB reach 169/4. The Super Kings responded with a score of 132/8, but they fell short by 37 runs. Kohli was awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding batting display.
