Football is a worldwide sport and probably the biggest sport. But not everyone starts their game at the youth academies, some do it at home with their brothers. There are a few brothers who have gone not only to play at higher levels but have even managed to do so together.
Here are some famous brothers who played football together at higher levels.
Granit and Taulant Xhaka
Before Granit moved to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012 he played alongside his brother Taulant. With FC Basel, Granit alongside Taulant made a total of 51 league appearances, with Granit appearing the most often.
Interestingly, the Xhaka brothers represent different countries abroad. Taulant plays for Albania, their home country, whereas Granit represents Switzerland, where they both were born.
Jerome and Kevin-Prince Boateng
The Boateng siblings, like the Xhaka brothers, represent different nations. While Jerome plays for Germany, Kevin-Prince Boateng plays for Ghana. The brothers originally played for the same club, but their careers have since taken distinct paths.
Kevin-Prince and Jerome shared a team at Hertha Berlin SC before they both rose to fame around Europe. Throughout his two years with the German team, Kevin-Prince was a regular, making 42 league appearances. Jerome, his brother, played 10 league games in just one season at Hertha.
Fabio and Rafael da Silva
At Old Trafford, Fabio and Rafael quickly established themselves by sharing three Premier League titles. Rafael kept winning at United, but Fabio found himself on the outside looking in, finally leaving for Cardiff. After a combined 131 league games, the two have now left the Red Devils.
Inaki and Nico Williams
Athletic Bilbao presently has the Williams brothers. Inaki, an Athletic Bilbao youth product, has played in almost 300 first-team games for the team, setting a La Liga record by playing in over 200 consecutive games. On April 28, 2021, in a 2-2 home loss to Real Valladolid, his brother Nico made his first-team and La Liga debuts after substituting for Jon Morcillo in the second half. On January 20, 2022, Nico Williams received a first-team deal after meeting a number of requirements.
Phil and Gary Neville
Phil and Gary Neville are a second set of Manchester United brothers who are possibly the most well-known of the previous football era. With a combined astounding 663 league appearances, the pair went on to become Old Trafford legends.
The Neville brothers began their playing careers at United as young players and spent their whole playing careers there. Phil moved to Everton in 2005, while Gary stayed at Old Trafford throughout.
