IPL 2023 has always brought excitement to the faces of fans. The 16th season could prove to be the most exciting season in recent years due to many reasons. One of the reasons is that the home and away matches are back after a gap of four years. But arguably the biggest reason for the excitement is the new rules that will come in play this season.
Here is a list of the new rules in IPL 2023:
Impact player rule
The impact player rule is something that is not very new in the cricket world. The Big Bash League since the year 2020 has been using the impact player rule. Even in the Indian domestic circuit, the impact player rule has been tried in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy.
According to this rule or law, teams can substitute during the course of the play to get a better result in a match-up or from the pitch. The impact player can be introduced at various stages like the start of innings, after a fall of a wicket, after an over finishes, after a batter gets retired, or even in between an over.
This rule does not mean that an Indian player can be replaced by an overseas player. Teams are allowed to field a maximum of four overseas players. If a team has only selected three or fewer overseas players then an Indian player can be replaced by an overseas player.
No team sheets
Captains will not be asked to have team sheets at the toss. This means that the captain can have a different playing 11 with the result of the toss. The team will name a playing 11 and five substitute players who can be used as impact players.
DRS calls
Teams will now be allowed to challenge on-field umpire calls like wides and no-balls. This rule was seen in its full effect during the recently concluded Women’s Premier League. This rule will be bringing a lot of controversies with itself.
Changes brought in by ICC
The ICC brought along many changes in September 2022 which are in full effect. These changes will be seen for the first time in IPL 2023.
When a batter is out caught then the new batter will come at the striker’s end regardless of whether the batters cross or not.
After the Covid pandemic, one of the biggest changes seen in cricket was that no saliva will be used on the ball.
The slow over rate will now see teams being punished. The ICC has said that teams not finishing the quota of their overs in the stipulated will have to field an extra fielder in the 30-yard circle for the overs they did not finish in time.
Unfair movement from the fielding side even including the keeper will result in five penalty runs to the batting team and a dead ball.
