WWE WrestleMania 39 ended on a high note as the fans got to witness the anticipated match between The Tribal Chief Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Here are the championship matches from day 2 of the WWE WrestleMania 39.
Asuka vs Bianca Belair
On day 2 of WWE WrestleMania 39, both Bianca Belair and Asuka fought as though they were trying to make a point. They were following a sleeper hit between Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair the previous night, and the build-up to their match lacked heat.
In response to a handspring moonsault countered by Asuka into a triangle choke, Belair rolled through the submission attempt to score a stunning suplex. The superstars also showed that they were prepared to risk injury, as seen when Belair hit Asuka with a powerful sit-out powerbomb at ringside.
Asuka sidestepped a hair whip, Belair avoided a cloud of mist, she rolled into an armbar, and Belair lifted her into a KOD to win.
Drew McIntyre vs Sheamus vs Gunther
Over their pursuit for the intercontinental championship, buddies McIntyre and Sheamus have experienced a lot of conflict. Gunther encouraged McIntyre and Sheamus to fight each other in an effort to manipulate the scenario. Only after McIntyre rocked Gunther with a Claymore Kick did the bruisers comply. Once he returned to the fight, Gunther lived up to his nickname of “The Ring General,” controlling the action and bludgeoning both opponents.
After being repeatedly bashed against the ropes by McIntyre and Sheamus, Gunther’s chest went black and blue. Following more than 25 Beats of the Bodhran on McIntyre, Sheamus received a lot of love from the audience. The onslaught continued until McIntyre could not stand. After hitting Gunther with a Celtic Cross and tying up the champion in a Cloverleaf, Sheamus came dangerously close to winning the one championship that has escaped him. The conflict between Sheamus and McIntyre persisted throughout the game.
The longtime friends traded powerful blows, but neither was able to permanently knock the other out. Gunther benefitted from the conflict between the two. The champion, Gunther powerbombed Sheamus onto McIntyre. Gunther then powerbombed McIntyre to secure the victory and retained his Intercontinental Championship title.
Cody Rhodes vs Roman Reigns
The main event of WWE WrestleMania 39 day 2 saw the Royald Rumble winner, Cody Rhodes challenge The Tribal Chief Roman Reigns for his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship belt. In the early stages of the battle, Rhodes used his speed advantage and amateur wrestling experience to conquer his formidable opponent. By grabbing Rhodes mid-air off a springboard move and planting him with a powerbomb, Reigns demonstrated the strength of his attack. Solo Sikoa first asserted himself by stopping Cody ringside, allowing his cousin Reigns to take control.
Later in the match, Rhodes electrified the fans by countering the champion and launching him onto an announcers’ table with a backdrop. From that point on, it was all Rhodes as he displayed his trademark manoeuvres, including the Cody Cutter and a suicide dive that had the audience cheering in favour. Sikoa continued helping Reigns. The referee seeing the situation removed Sikoa which led to an argument between the Tribal Chief and the referee. This helped Rhodes in making another comeback. Rhodes even landed his finisher Cross Rhodes and almost pinned the champion.
From this point onward the match turned into a complete chaos. During his comeback Rhodes accidentally kicked the referee as he was punching Reigns. Then a double clothesline resulted in both the wrestlers laying down.
The Usos entered the match and knocked Rhodes out with superkicks and a 1D one night after losing the undisputed tag team titles to Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. When Zayn and Owens showed up to level the playing field, the fans erupted as loudly as they had all night. Owens hit a stunner on Reigns, and Zayn hit a Helluva Kick on Reigns that rocked SoFi Stadium.
The live fans enjoyed Rhodes’ bionic elbow and punches against Reigns as he channeled the spirit of his late father “The American Dream,” Dusty Rhodes. With two consecutive Cross Rhodes, Rhodes appeared to have the match won, but interference from Paul Heyman and Sikoa allowed Reigns to hit the match-winning spear. The Tribal Chief continued his reign as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion as he defeated Cody Rhodes in an incredible match.
