4 Min Read

The Melbourne Stars got an impressive all-round victory over the Hobart Hurricanes vs Melbourne Stars match by eight wickets in the MCG, giving the reigning champions of the Big Bash League their first loss. The win could not have come at a better time for the Stars, who are the only side in the BBL that has yet to win the tournament.

Peter Siddle Rolls Back the Years

Veteran fast bowler Peter Siddle, who is 41, showed his class as a bowler as he finished with figures of 3 for 30. His responsible display with the ball restricted the Hurricanes to a manageable 158 for 9 as Stars captain Marcus Stoinis decided to bowl first.

His display again reflected the qualities of a very competitive cricketer, as he and Haris Rauf tore apart the tail of Hobart with 4 wickets for a mere 6 runs in the last eight overs.

Stoinis Vows to Continue Struggling

Then Marcus Stoinis rounded off an excellent performance with 2 for 18 in his bowling stint, while hitting an unconquered 62 off just 31 deliveries. Unfazed and destructive at the same time, the Stars’ captain ended the match with style by hitting a six, which earned him the Player of the Match award.

In response to Chasing 159, the Stars displayed a sense of dominance as they reached 159/2 with four overs left. Stoinis also found a good partner in Campbell Kellaway, who was not out at 41 from 27 balls with no late jolt.

Hurricanes’ Promising Start

The innings of Hurricanes started on delicate lines when they lost aggressive opener Mitch Owen early, with Glenn Maxwell opening the spell. However, Gulders started flowing with regular wickets, with resilient Ben McDermott top-scoring with an excellent innings of 69.

A temporary alliance between McDermott and rookie all-rounder Tim David had pointed to a strong total, but the fall of David in the powerplay sparked a sudden collapse.

Glenn Maxwell Shines in the Field

Apart from this early breakthrough, Maxwell again displayed why he is identified amongst the best fielders in international cricket. His stunning boundary catch to get rid of Matthew Wade was a highlight of this match as well as the whole series.

Post the match, Siddle expressed how committed he is and how he prepares. Since retiring from international cricket back in 2019, the ex-Test star is still making a huge impact in the BBL.

The Hobart Hurricanes are set to return to their BBL matches with a fixture against Melbourne Renegades this Sunday in Geelong Melbourne Stars will be traveling to Adelaide to meet the Adelaide Strikers on the next Tuesday night.
