Hobart Hurricanes Win First-Ever BBL Title

Finally. After 14 seasons, the Hobart Hurricanes have done it! On January 27, they lifted their first-ever Big Bash League (BBL) trophy with an emphatic seven-wicket victory over the Sydney Thunder at the iconic Bellerive Oval.

A historic day for the team and their fans after the years.

Thunder’s Competitive Start

The Sydney Thunder came out swinging. And why wouldn’t they? Their openers, Jason Sangha (67 runs) and David Warner (48 runs), put up a stellar 97-run partnership. At one point, it seemed like the Thunder were on their way to posting an unbeatable total.

But the Hurricanes’ bowlers had other plans.

The pace duo of Riley Meredith and Nathan Ellis turned the tide. Together, they grabbed three wickets each, reining in the Thunder to 182-7 by the end of 20 overs. A solid total. But not enough.

Mitchell Owen’s Record-Breaking Knock

Now, here’s where things get crazy. Mitchell Owen, the Hurricanes’ opener, walked in and tore the Thunder’s bowling attack apart. It wasn’t just a knock. It was a spectacle.

Owen smashed a jaw-dropping 108 runs off just 42 balls. Think about it: 12 sixes. Seven fours. All delivered with the kind of confidence that makes you go, “Wow.”

In just 14.2 overs, the Hurricanes chased down the target. The final boundary? Courtesy of Ben McDermott, who scooped Nathan McAndrew to seal the deal.

The crowd was Electric.

A Season Full of Magic

BBL 2025: Hobart Hurricanes Tops The Spot In Table
Hobart Hurricanes

The Hurricanes were in top form this season. They finished at the top of the league table, racking up 15 points from 10 matches. Out of those, they won seven games and lost just two. Talk about consistency.

Their journey toward the final was too smooth. In the Qualifier, they edged out the Sydney Sixers with a 12-run win. Then, in the final, they delivered a performance for the ages against the Thunder, who had battled their way up from third place in the league standings.

Individual Brilliance Shines Bright

Mitchell Owen wasn’t just the star of the final. He was the star. His century will be remembered as one of the finest in BBL history. Naturally, he was named Player of the Match.

On the other side, Thunder captain David Warner ended the season as the leading run-scorer, tallying 357 runs in 11 innings. Not bad for a team that finished last just a season ago.

The Thunder deserve credit, too. Their turnaround under Warner’s leadership was nothing short of remarkable.

From Underdogs to Champions

What makes this win even sweeter for the Hurricanes? The journey.

They’ve faced countless setbacks over the years. Missed opportunities. Narrow losses. But they never stopped pushing. This season, everything came together. Strong leadership, team cohesion, and individual brilliance—it all culminated in their maiden title.

What’s Next for the Hobart Hurricanes?

The Hurricanes are not just looking to celebrate. They are looking ahead. With their first BBL trophy under their belt, they will aim to build on this success and become a force to reckon with in future seasons.

For them, it was not just their victory. It was a memory they will hold on to forever.

And the Big Bash League will remember this season for its thrilling matches, record-breaking performances, and the Hurricanes’ unforgettable rise to glory.
