The result of the Sri Lanka-New Zealand series will determine India’s fate if it loses or plays a draw in Ahmedabad after being humiliated in Indore. Australia has already qualified for the championship match at the Oval from June 7 to 11, thanks to their nine-wicket victory in Indore. Australia is in first place on the WTC table with 68.52 percent (PCT). When a team’s total points are divided by the total points that were contested, percentage points are obtained.
A team receives 12 points for a victory, 4 points for a draw, and 6 points in a tie.
Australia currently has 148 points after 18 games, with 11 victories and 4 ties. They are competing for 216 available points and have a PCT of 68.52.
Australia would still be in first place with 64.91 PCT (148/228100) even if they lost the fourth and final Test against India.
What happens to India?
After accumulating 123 points in 17 Tests (10 wins and 2 draws), India’s PCT is 60.29. India has dropped a few points throughout this cycle as a result of its slow overrate.
If India wins the last Test, their PCT will increase to 62.5 with 135 points instead of the full 216 that are available (18 Tests). They will then keep their second place and advance to the final.
If India loses, their PCT will fall to 56.94, and they will then have to rely on the outcome of Sri Lanka’s away series against New Zealand.
India’s PCT will fall to 58.79 in the event of a tie, and even then, they will have to wait for the outcome of the Sri Lanka-New Zealand series.
Same rules apply in a tie, with India’s PCT being 59.72.
How can Sri Lanka qualify?
The sole chance Sri Lanka has of making it to the last qualifying round depends on a 2-0 victory in New Zealand, one of the most difficult away games for teams from the subcontinent.
The current PCT for Sri Lanka is 53.33, with 64 points out of a possible 120. (10 Tests).
If Sri Lanka wins the series 2-0 and India loses, draws, or ties the fourth Test, their PCT will be 61.11, with 88 points out of a possible 144 points on the line.
So even if Sri Lanka loses the last Test, they will still have a lower maximum PCT (55.55) than India (56.94) if they draw even one game and win by a single goal.
