How does Brighton defeating United affect the Premier League table

3 Min Read

Brighton & Hove Albion FC defeated Manchester United in great fashion as World Cup winner, Alexis Mac Allister kept his cool to convert the 99th-minute penalty into a goal. Brighton manager, Roberto De Zerbi was delighted with his team’s win. Roberto De Zerbi even went on to say that there is a ‘God of Football’. The Brighton manager believed that they deserved to win in the FA Cup semi-finals. Brighton in their last meeting with United ended up on the losing side when the two sides met in the FA Cup semi-finals. United won the previous encounter on penalties which made Thursday’s (Friday in India) win in the Premier League even better.

What does this win mean for the Premier League table?

Brighton now are in the sixth position with 55 points just 4 points behind 5th placed Liverpool with two extra games in hand. Brighton would think that they are not too off from a Champions League spot as well. They are just 8 points behind Manchester United with a game in hand. Manchester United on the other hand has failed to tighten their grip over the top 4 Champions League spot. Liverpool who have played one game more than United will feel they are still in the race for the Champions League spot. Liverpool has found some great form in the last stage of the Premier League. The Anfield club are on a 5-game winning streak.

Tottenham Hotspurs moved to 7th position following Brighton’s win over United. Tottenham have played 2 games more than Brighton and are still a point behind. Spurs will find it extremely difficult to qualify for Europe this season. The North London club is also tied with 8th-placed, Aston Villa who could make life even harder for Spurs.

Brighton’s injury-time winner was the latest goal for the side in Premier League history. The goal helped Brighton to create yet another history. The 2022-23 season became the first time that Brighton has defeated Manchester United twice in a single Premier League season. Brighton defeated United at Old Trafford with a 1-2 margin. In that game too Alexis Mac Allister scored but unfortunately for him it was in his own team’s net. It was a brace from Pascal Groß that helped Brighton to win the game away from home.
