How is Ashwin even permitted to play for India in the Asia Cup? Look at his IPL performance. Kiran More questions Ashwin’s selection
India selected two spinners and three spin-all-rounders for the Asia Cup 2022, which begins on August 27 in the United Arab Emirates. The spin assault also includes Deepak Hooda, Ravi Bishnoi, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ashwin.
The BCCI on Monday released India’s 15-person team for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 competition. Both vice-captain KL Rahul and former captain Virat Kohli, who missed the West Indies tour and was out of the team for the ODIs against Zimbabwe, were back in the lineup. Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, though, missed the bus because of a back problem. Former selection committee chairman Kiran More praised the team’s overall selection but questioned the choice to include senior Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
Three all-rounders and two spinners were selected by India for the Asia Cup, which begins on August 27 in the United Arab Emirates. The spin assault also includes Deepak Hooda, Ravi Bishnoi, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ashwin.
More expressed surprise at finding Ashwin’s name on the roster, but he praised young Bishnoi for being selected for the Asia Cup team and did not object to the team’s choice to play other spinners in that position. Following the announcement of the lineup, More told Star Sports that India should have chosen a spinner instead of Ashwin, either Mohammed Shami or Axar Patel.
“Even I was surprised. How on earth is Ashwin a part of this group? each time as well. Even at the most recent World Cup, he was chosen for the squad but did not participate. You can see that his IPL record is not particularly spectacular. I think that should have been taken on by Shami or Axar Patel. Axar has performed brilliantly as well. I’ll be represented at the World Cup by my player Shami. I want wicket-taking bowlers. The man asserted that Shami can take wickets with the new ball in both middle and slog overs.
Professionals have questioned Ashwin’s choice on numerous occasions. Another former chairman of selectors, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, questioned Ashwin’s very place in India’s T20I team when Ashwin made his eight-month return to the white-ball system.
A significant query, actually. I have no idea what Ashwin is talking about. Why is he now playing T20 for the West Indies? Why wasn’t he dropped, why wasn’t he there, why didn’t he play T20 in England? It has all of us stumped. Jadeja is your starting spinner because of this. The backup spinner, Chahal, Axar Patel, or Ashwin, is the second spinner. Of these four, only two will depart. Ideally… I don’t know Ashwin, but perhaps it has to do with his versatility. But Chahal, the wrist spinner, would be my first pick, he admitted to Fan Code earlier this month when on the West Indies tour.
