Quick start
An IPL clears the VIO data set pages but doesn’t refresh the PLPA. To match the most recent PLPA, the system resets the page and segment tables. This is typically done when VIO needs to be refreshed, but LPA has not changed. As a result, jobs that use VIO data sets cannot warm start.
Warm Start
An IPL that keeps the pages of journaled VIO data sets and doesn’t reload the PLPA. Jobs executing at the time of the IPL will be able to restart with the journaled VIO data sets as a result.
A cold start IPL is frequently the recommended strategy (specifying CLPA). It is possible to employ the other alternatives, but significant caution must be exercised to prevent unforeseen change or to back out of change. You might utilize a warm start when you wish to restart long-running jobs after IPL. However, another option is to divide the jobs into smaller chunks that send real data sets rather than using VIO. Long-term storage of VIO data is no longer necessary, thanks to contemporary disc controllers with huge cache memories. A cold start JES should not be confused with a cold start IPL (CLPA would often be used instead of the term “cold start”). Cold starting JES is very uncommon on a production system if ever, a practice that completely wipes out any previous data.
