Welsh world champion boxer Howard Winstone, MBE, was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, and lived from 15 April 1939 until 30 September 2000. At the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Winstone, who was competing as an amateur, won the bantamweight title of the Amateur Boxing Association and a gold medal. Winstone was primarily a two-fisted fighter in his early amateur career. However, as a teenager working in a nearby toy factory, an accident caused him to lose the tips of three fingers on his right hand.
