ICC Cricket World Cup 2027: The countdown has already begun for the next ICC Cricket World Cup in 2027, which South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will jointly host. Ever since the 2023 edition wrapped up, ending in heartbreak for Indian fans, there has been considerable excitement about the tournament returning to Africa. It has been nearly 20 years since the continent last hosted a World Cup.

South Africa’s Hosting History

For South Africa, this will be a special occasion. They have not hosted many major ICC events in recent years. The last big one was the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, followed by the Champions Trophy in 2009. Many still remember the 2003 Cricket World Cup, also held there. On the women’s side, South Africa has hosted two World Cups: the 2005 ODI event and the T20 World Cup in 2023.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 Plans

The ICC has confirmed the schedule. South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will share hosting duties for the 50-over tournament, which is set to take place in October and November 2027. A total of 54 matches will be played in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027: 44 in South Africa and 10 split between Zimbabwe and Namibia.

South Africa has locked in eight stadiums for the games: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, East London, and Paarl. Cricket South Africa also announced that a local organizing committee will oversee the event, led by former South African minister Trevor Manuel.

Sharing CSA’s vision for the tournament, chairperson Pearl Maphoshe said, “CSA’s vision is to stage a global, inspiring event which will reflect the face of South Africa – diverse, inclusive, and united.”

Rohit Sharma’s Big Decision

On the Indian front, there is big news too. Veteran opener Rohit Sharma, now 38, has stepped away from the other two formats but has made it clear he is keen on playing in the 2027 World Cup. If he makes it, this would be his fourth ODI World Cup. His batting form is not in question as he is still scoring runs, but his age and fitness will be under the spotlight.

Rohit has already cemented his place in Indian cricket history, having led the team to victories in the ICC T20 World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy. A World Cup win in 2027 would put him in the rare company of MS Dhoni as a captain who has lifted all three ICC limited-overs trophies. For now, though, his future in ODIs will be decided after discussions with the BCCI following the Asia Cup.
