According to The Economic Times, JioStar, controlled by Reliance Industries, has officially told the ICC that it cannot continue with the remaining two years of its four-year India media rights contract.
Why JioStar Pulled Out of T20 World Cup Agreement
The reported reason behind JioStar’s sudden step back is financial pressure. The company has been facing heavy losses, making it difficult to sustain the current deal. Meanwhile, the ICC has already started a fresh sale process for India media rights for 2026 to 29, aiming for around USD 2.4 billion. JioStar’s withdrawal, however, has disrupted that process and left ICC in a tricky situation.
A Billion Dollar Deal Falls Apart
The original deal signed for the 2024 to 27 cycle was worth USD 3 billion, covering at least one major men’s cricket tournament each year. With JioStar stepping away, ICC has now reached out to other broadcast giants. Sony Pictures Networks India, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are among the platforms approached so far, but none have shown strong willingness to commit because of the massive financial value attached.
Massive Losses Highlight The Real Problem
Reports suggest that JioStar’s decision is driven by mounting financial stress. The broadcaster’s audited accounts show a sharp rise in anticipated losses on sports content, from Rs 12,319 crore to Rs 25,760 crore in just one financial year. This jump reflects how difficult it has been for JioStar to recover costs and generate enough revenue from such high priced cricket rights.
