ICC World Cup Records and Statistics: Highest Individual Cricketer Score Recorded

4 Min Read

Over the years, the ICC Cricket World Cup has witnessed some outstanding performances. Some bumps have been minor but quite significant. While the others have been important and ongoing for a while. Martin Guptill of New Zealand now holds the World Cup record for the highest individual score. The second double century ever in a Cricket World Cup game was scored by Martin. In just 163 balls, he scored 237 runs in an unbroken innings. His innings produced 162 runs off just 35 balls and featured 24 boundaries and 11 sixes.

At Wellington, New Zealand was competing against West Indies in the fourth quarterfinal of the 2015 ICC World Cup. Marlon Samuels dropped Guptill in the opening over at square leg, which was perhaps the mistake of the competition. He began his innings in the same manner as every previous ODI. Guptill reached his half-century at less than a run per ball, much like Rohit Sharma, who has three double centuries in ODI cricket. From that point on, his strike rate increased and never decreased. The number of balls he needed to score each set of 50 runs can be used to examine the acceleration.

He needed 111 balls to achieve his hundred after reaching the halfway point in 64 balls. From this point forward, he exclusively dealt in borders. In 134 balls, he reached 150, and 18 balls later, he scored his first ODI double century. In 50 overs, the home team scored 393/6. The West Indian batsmen faced a highly challenging but not impossible challenge. They had self-confidence, and their run rate was good. However, they kept dropping wickets at regular intervals, and in the 31st over, they were dismissed for 250. By winning by a score of 143 runs, New Zealand moved to the World Cup Semi-finals.

Guptill alone scored 92 of the 153 runs that the Kiwis scored in the final 10 overs. He surpassed Glenn Turner to become New Zealand’s highest individual scorer in the World Cup while batting on 172. He passed West Indian Chris Gayle, who had hit 215 just 25 days earlier, after scoring 44 runs. Guptill‘s inning had more of an effect because it took place in a crucial elimination game. The assault allowed the Kiwis to reach the semi-finals for the seventh time, and they ultimately participated in the Finals.

He played some of his famous straight drives throughout his outstanding knock with little effort and also demonstrated enormous power with his massive sixes. In fact, he hit a six in the final over that left the stadium. This score is challenging to overcome, and the extra pressure of a World Cup game makes it even more challenging.
