Former India opener Aakash Chopra expressed his displeasure with young Kolkata Knight Riders bowler Suyash Sharma for his attempted wide delivery as Yashasvi Jaiswal neared his century during an IPL 2023 match against Rajasthan Royals on May 11 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was on 94 at the time, but he was at the non-striker’s end in the 13th over, when Sanju Samson was on fire. The Rajasthan Royals captain delivered a dot ball in the 13th over of the chase. Suyash hit one down the leg-side, but Samson managed to straight bat it and keep it from going for four wides.
Suyash Sharma had a cheeky grin on his face after the over ended. Sanju Samson, on the other hand, directed Yashasvi Jaiswal to finish it with a six in the next over and reach his century. After Suyash finished his over, RR needed three runs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal reached 98 not out with a boundary in the first ball of the 14th over. It was the winning runs, as Yashasvi missed his second century by just two runs. There weren’t enough runs for Yashasvi to reach his second IPL century, but he was punching the air with delight as Rajasthan completed the 150-run chase in 13.1 overs to secure a big win.
“Trying to bowl a wide to prevent Yashasvi from reaching his 100….poor taste IMHO,” tweeted Aakash Chopra.

When fans objected, Chopra presented a hypothetical situation to support his point of view, criticising Suyash Sharma.
“Imagine a Pakistani bowler doing that to stop Kohli from reaching his century.” The same people who are telling you how it’s perfectly fine…and that it wasn’t intentional…will ensure that bowler starts trending in minutes. Level of trolling hi alag hota tab. “Typical Twitter behaviour, in my opinion,” he added.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 98 not out on 5 sixes and 13 boundaries, while captain Samson remained unbeaten on 48 from just 29 balls. The 21-year-old opener increased his IPL 2023 run total to 575, the most by an uncapped player in the current season.
The big win also propelled Rajasthan Royals back into the top four. With 12 points from 12 matches and a healthy NRR, Rajasthan is in third place and has a chance to make the playoffs.
