Squads selection for the South Africa tour, too, has been deferred accordingly
The Indian tour of South Africa is expected to be postponed by at least a week. Following the finding of the Omicron strain of the coronavirus in various countries, including southern Africa, it is understood that the BCCI has been discussing with Cricket South Africa about a deferral.
India is a country in Asia. The BCCI is considering delaying the senior squad’s journey to South Africa, despite the fact that a team is currently touring South Africa. The Indian team was supposed to go out on a charter flight on December 9, but that has been postponed, according to sources.
The squad selection for the South Africa tour has also been postponed as a result. After India’s first Test against New Zealand, the selection meeting was set to take place. However, because the Indian board is in continual contact with its South African counterpart, it has been decided to hold the selection meeting once the road forward has been clarified.
In South Africa, the team will play three Tests, three One-Day Internationals, and four Twenty20 Internationals. Following a Covid outbreak in the camp in September, the Indian squad refused to play the fifth Test against England in Manchester.
Meanwhile, the A squad is in Bloemfontein for their second unofficial four-day Test against South Africa A. In response to the growing alarm, the Indian government’s travel advise has designated select nations as “at-risk,” while a Health Ministry advisory to all states last week named the new virus variety, B.1.1.529, as potentially having “severe public health implications.”
Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic gold champion in the javelin, cancelled his flight to South Africa for a training and competition stay on Monday.
The Covid numbers released by the South African government’s health ministry on December 1 revealed 8,561 new cases, but did not include the number of infections caused by the Omicron variety.
