Temba Bavuma Downplays Coach Shukri Conrad’s Controversial Comment: South Africa captain Temba Bavuma tried to calm things down on Wednesday after head coach Shukri Conrad’s remark about wanting India to “really grovel” created a stir. Temba Bavuma said the coach would likely reflect on what he said, offering a straightforward explanation to ease the tension.

The comment drew criticism from several former players in both India and South Africa, including legends Anil Kumble and Dale Steyn. Many felt the word “grovel” was an unfortunate choice because of its historical meaning in cricket.

Coach Will Reflect on His Words, Says Temba Bavuma

During the post-match press conference, Bavuma shared that he only learned about Conrad’s comments earlier in the day.

Comments made by coach came to me this morning. I was focused on game and didn’t have a chance to speak to him. Shukri is close to 60 years old and he will have a look at his comments,” he said.

He also referenced Jasprit Bumrah’s earlier “bauna” remark about his height, adding, “But in this series certain guys have also crossed the line. Not saying coach crossed the line, but he will surely think about it.”

Why the Word Grovel Is Sensitive in Cricket

The reaction to the word “grovel” may seem strong, but the term has a famous and sensitive history in cricket.

In 1976, during a series between England and the West Indies, English captain Tony Greig said, “… I intend to make them (West Indies) grovel.” The West Indies went on to dominate the series 5 to 0, turning the comment into one of cricket’s most iconic moments of regret.

South Africa Seals Historic Series Win

South Africa completed a 2 to 0 sweep of India, finishing with a dominant 408-run victory in the second Test. They entered the match already boosted by a 30-run win in the first Test in Kolkata.

Conrad made his controversial comment after the fourth day of the second Test, when South Africa were already in a strong position and close to securing their first Test series win in India in 25 years.
