  • Indian Hockey Team- Amsterdam 1928:

From the late 1920s up to the 1950s, the Indian men’s hockey team was indestructible, establishing its reputation as the world’s best team. Its reign began with an Olympic gold medal in 1928. The Indian hockey team won their first Olympic gold medal after scoring 29 goals without reply in five games. Dhyan Chand, the wizard, netted 14 goals, including a hat-trick in the final against the Netherlands. This was the nation’s first Olympic medal in hockey.

  • Indian Hockey Team- Los Angeles 1932:

Because the world was in the grip of the Great Depression at the time, only three teams were permitted to participate in the Los Angeles Games. India prevailed and beat the United States and Japan to take home their second gold medal at the quadrennial event. The Indian hockey team crushed Japan 11-1 in the first round. A 10-goal performance by Roop Singh, Dhyan Chand’s younger brother, and eight goals by the goal wizard himself concluded an astonishing 24-1 win over the USA and a second consecutive Olympic gold medal.

  • Indian Hockey Team- Berlin 1936:

The Indian hockey team achieved a hat-trick of Olympic Gold medals in 1936, led by Dhyan Chand. The following year, India scored 38 goals in five matches and only conceded one in the final against Germany, which they won 8-1 because of Dhyan Chand’s second hat-trick in the Olympic finals.

  • Indian Hockey Team- London 1948:

The Indian hockey team won the country’s first gold medal after independence, regaining the top rank on the Olympic podium in 1948 in London.  India, led by Kishan Lal, scored 25 goals in five matches and thrashed Great Britain 4-0 in the final at Wembley Stadium.

  • Indian Hockey Team- Helsinki 1952:

After winning in the Olympics in London in 1948, the next Olympic Gold was also snatched by the Indian Hockey Team. The Indian hockey team overcame the midnight sun and cold conditions to win their fifth-consecutive Olympic gold medal.

Captain KD Singh Baba and his deputy Balbir Singh Sr led India to win their fifth gold medal in hockey, overcoming the freezing temperature and 24×7 sunlight in Finland. The team struggled in the first match in a strange setting but glittered when it required. India beat the United Kingdom in the semi-finals and the Netherlands in the final. In three separate matches, Balbir Singh Sr scored nine goals.

  • Indian Hockey Team- Melbourne 1956:

It was six Olympic golds in a row for the Indian hockey team in Melbourne in 1956. India defeated Singapore (6-0), Afghanistan (14-0) and the USA (16-0) in the group stage before ousting Germany (1-0) in the semis and Pakistan (1-0) in the gold-medal contest.

  • Indian Hockey Team- Tokyo 1964:

The Indian hockey team quickly returned to the Olympic podium, winning gold in Tokyo in 1964. India won all four matches and drew two in the group rounds before overcoming Australia in the semi-finals. They met Pakistan in the final for the third time in a row and won 1-0 due to a penalty stroke goal.

  • Indian Hockey Team- Moscow 1980:

After two bronze medals and a disappointing seventh-place finish in the preceding Olympics in Montreal, India returned with a gold in 1980 after 4 times Olympics. India moved to the final by winning all three matches and drawing two. In a stunning championship final in Moscow, India defeated Spain 4-3 to win the eighth gold medal.

  • Abhinav Bindra- Beijing 2008:

India made major achievements in individual sports in the twenty-first century, gaining medals in weightlifting and shooting in 2000 and 2004, however, neither were gold. However, Abhinav Bindra created history by becoming the first Indian to win an individual gold medal in Beijing in 2008. Bindra grabbed the Olympic gold medal with a near-perfect 10.8 in his final shot.

  • Neeraj Chopra- Tokyo 2020:

With his gold in the men’s javelin throw at Tokyo 2020, Neeraj Chopra became India’s second individual Olympic champion after Abhinav Bindra. It was India’s first track-and-field victory at an Olympic Games. He entered the final in the top slot and maintained that position throughout the tournament. His javelin throw of 87.58m gained him the gold medal, boosting India’s total at Tokyo 2020 to seven medals, which is the most ever at a Games.
