Three Strong Candidates to Become India’s Next Test Captain
India’s senior batsman Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket. On May 7, he shared this news through a post on Instagram. Rohit will now only play One Day matches for India.
Rohit became India’s Test captain in 2022. His Test career lasted for 11 years. He played 67 Test matches and scored 4301 runs. He also made 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. In the World Test Championship, Rohit is the top run scorer for India.
Now that Rohit Sharma has retired from Test cricket, the big question is—who will be the next Test captain of India? Let’s take a look at the three players who can become India’s next Test captain.
1. Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah is India’s main fast bowler. Whenever Rohit was not available, Bumrah led the team. He also helped India win the Perth Test in Australia.
Bumrah is also the current vice-captain, so the team may choose him as the next captain. However, his fitness has always been a concern. If he stays fit, he is a strong option for captaincy.
2. Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is seen as a future captain. He has already captained India’s B team and has played in all three formats for India.
Gill is a confident batsman and has done well in international cricket. His good performance as a captain in IPL 2025 can help him become India’s Test captain too.
3. Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant is one of the most important players in India’s Test team. As a wicketkeeper, he sees the game closely and understands it well.
Pant has played many match-winning innings in Test cricket, especially in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). He is already part of the leadership group. So, it will not be a surprise if he becomes the next Test captain.
After Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Tests, the BCCI has to choose a new captain. Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant are the top three choices. It will be interesting to see who gets the role before the next World Test Championship.
