India and the Australian Prime Minister’s XI have decided to play a 50-over match on Sunday, December 1, after the first day of their two-day warm-up game in Canberra was washed out. Continuous rain at Manuka Oval prevented even the toss from happening on the first day.
The toss is now scheduled for 8:40 AM IST on Sunday, and the first ball will be bowled at 9:10 AM IST. The teams have agreed to play the game with a pink ball to help the Indian side prepare for their upcoming day-night Test against Australia in Adelaide, starting on December 6.
“Play has been abandoned for Day 1 and will resume tomorrow at 9:10 AM IST. A coin toss will be at 8:40 AM IST. Teams have agreed to play 50 overs per side,” said the BCCI in an official statement.
Weather Remains a Concern
However, Sunday’s weather forecast is not very promising. The Manuka Oval area is under a minor flood watch, and occasional showers are expected throughout the day.
Match Practice Crucial for India
India is keen to avoid losing another day’s play. With limited opportunities to practice against the pink ball, this match is vital for preparation. The team last played a pink-ball test in March 2022 against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.
The pink ball is known to favor bowlers, especially under low light, making it challenging for batters. India’s last day-night Test in Adelaide ended poorly when the team was bowled out for just 36 runs in the second innings.
This warm-up match is also important for skipper Rohit Sharma, who missed the first Test of the series due to the birth of his second child. The game offers him and the team a chance to adapt to the conditions and build momentum before the crucial Adelaide Test.
