India Withdraws From Asia Cup 2025: BCCI Bold Move

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced its withdrawal from the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. The announcement is made in the backdrop of worsening bilateral ties between India and Pakistan.

The BCCI orally communicated the withdrawal of its participation in the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup and Men’s T20 Asia Cup to be held in September 2025 to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), as per reports. The BCCI’s move to exclude Pakistan from the tournament has generated debate around the cricketing world.

BCCI’s Position on Political and Sports Relations

The growing tensions between Pakistan and India, such as military skirmishes and terrorist intrusions, have greatly affected the mutual relations between the two countries, particularly in sports.

The BCCI has said that India cannot play in an ACC tournament, which is currently governed by Mohsin Naqvi, the former head of the Pakistan Cricket Board. The Indian board has already made it clear that it cannot take a position of supporting an organization with a Pakistani identity, especially in a period that is so tenuous.

A source from the BCCI emphasized, “We have verbally communicated to ACC about our withdrawal from the upcoming Asia Cups, and our future participation in their events too is on hold.” This reflects the growing sentiment among Indian officials and the public that political issues should not be overlooked when making sporting decisions.

Impact on the Asia Cup 2025 and Broadcasting Deals

India’s withdrawal from the Asia Cup 2025 would take a dramatic hit on its viewership and value. The loss of one of the biggest draws in international cricket could lead to lower interest from broadcasters and advertisers.

For example, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), which has secured the broadcasting rights for the Asia Cup 2024, which has been sold at a value of 170 million USD over eight years, stands to potentially lose out on their investment if they don’t have a high-interest Indian-Pakistani clash.

This may also lead to the renegotiation of the broadcasting contracts, and the Asia Cup’s financial stability would be impacted. With 75% of the broadcasting profits going to the ACC’s full members, which include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan, India’s exclusion may diminish the total appeal of the tournament, and this would affect all the participating countries.

Effects on Pakistan and the ACC

The BCCI decision is another setback for Pakistan, which has experienced several setbacks in recent years. In 2023, India declined to go to Pakistan to play the Asia Cup, opting to host the matches in Sri Lanka.

India later won by defeating Sri Lanka in the final. In addition, at the beginning of 2025, India participated in the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai, while host country Pakistan did not progress beyond the group stage.

This ongoing exclusion of Pakistan from international cricket may have implications of far-reaching implications on the progress of cricket in Pakistan. Moreover, India’s non-participation in ACC competitions may put a strain on relations within the organization, especially with other full members dependent on India for economic gains.

The Future of India-Pakistan Cricket Relations

While India continues to participate in ICC tournaments, there is no obligation to play bilateral series or tournaments against Pakistan. If India chooses not to participate in the Asia Cup 2025, this may be the precedent India uses for future events at the ACC in a politically charged environment.

For now, it seems the BCCI’s decision clouds the future of cricketing relations between the countries, and we will have to wait to see what, if anything at all, happens with the Asia Cup 2025 as the Indian board holds strong to its decision.
