Indian badminton enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the Asian Games 2023 badminton tournaments set to take place in Hangzhou, China, starting from September 28. This prestigious sporting event will see Indian shuttlers competing in seven different categories, including men’s team, women’s team, men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. All the thrilling badminton action will unfold at the Binjiang Gymnasium during the Asian Games 2023.
The history of badminton at the Asian Games dates back to 1958 when it was introduced as a demonstration sport. It was later recognized as a regular competitive event in 1962. China stands out as the most successful nation in Asian Games badminton, boasting an impressive tally of 107 medals, including 43 gold medals, while Indonesia follows with 28 gold medals.
India made its debut in badminton at the Asian Games in 1974, and since then, Indian shuttlers have earned a total of 10 medals at this continental event. Notably, former world champion and Olympic medalist PV Sindhu secured India’s only silver medal at the Asian Games. She reached the final of the women’s singles at Jakarta 2018 but faced defeat against Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying in straight sets. Another Olympic medalist, Saina Nehwal, clinched the third position on the women’s singles podium during the same event.

PV Sindhu (women’s singles), HS Prannoy (men’s singles), Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (men’s doubles), and Gayatri Gopichand-Treesa Jolly (women’s doubles) secured automatic spots in the Indian badminton team based on their world rankings.
The selection trials held in Hyderabad determined the remaining spots. Alongside PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth and Ashmita Chaliha will participate in the individual singles events. Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun will represent India in men’s doubles, while Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto form the second women’s doubles combination. Tanisha Crasto will also compete in the mixed doubles category alongside K Sai Pratheek, while Rohan Kapoor will partner with N Sikki Reddy, who was part of the women’s team that won a bronze medal at Incheon 2014.
