Indonesia is set to host the 2028 FIBA U-17 Women’s Basketball World Cup and the 2029 FIBA U-19 Basketball World Cup. This will be the first time in history that an edition of each competition will be held in Asia.

“FIBA has given Indonesia the right to host the 2028 FIBA U-17 Women’s Basketball World Cup and the 2029 FIBA U-19 Basketball World Cup,” FIBA wrote on its website.

The decision came a few days after a special visit to Jakarta by a FIBA delegation that included FIBA Treasurer Ingo Weiss and FIBA COO Patrick Mariller.

The delegation met with the President of the Indonesian Basketball Association (PERBASI), Budi Djiwandono; Secretary General of PERBASI, Nirmala Dewi; Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia, Dito Ariotedjo; FIBA Central Board Member and Minister of State Owned-Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia, Erick Thohir; and the Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Indonesia, Wijaya Noeradi.

FIBA made the announcement after their delegation led by FIBA Treasurer, Ingo Weiss, and COO FIBA, Patrick Mariller, met with the General Chair of the Indonesian Basketball Association (Perbasi) Budi Djiwandono this week.

“Now, fans in Indonesia can look forward to the presence of future stars. These two tournaments are the right event for talented stars from all over the world to show their abilities,” said FIBA.

Indonesia was awarded the hosting rights after it successfully hosted matches of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The country has also developed infrastructure for the growth of the sport in the country. The opening of a FIBA office in Indonesia last year opened the door of opportunities for the upliftment of basketball in the country.
