Indian badminton players will look to bounce back from a disappointing home outing when the USD 500,000 Indonesia Masters Super 500 begins at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta from January 20–25.
At last week’s India Open, Indian shuttlers endured their poorest performance in three years, with none advancing to the semifinals. Lakshya Sen was the only player to reach the quarterfinals before losing a three-game thriller to eventual champion Lin Chun-Yi.
The men’s singles draw at Indonesia Masters 2026 features Lakshya Sen (seventh seed), Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, Tharun Mannepalli and Ayush Shetty. Lakshya will open against Singapore’s Jia Heng Jason Teh, whom he has beaten five times, including earlier this month at the Malaysia Open. A potential second-round clash could see him face compatriot Prannoy, provided the latter gets past Malaysia’s former world No. 2 Lee Zii Jia.
Prannoy faces a tough opening test against Lee, while Srikanth, a former world No. 1, begins against Japan’s Koki Watanabe. Tharun Mannepalli takes on Yushi Tanaka of Japan, and young Ayush Shetty has been handed a difficult draw against third seed and home favourite Jonatan Christie.
In women’s singles, fifth seed PV Sindhu, returning after a foot injury, will face Japan’s Manami Suizu in the opening round. Sindhu will be keen to improve on her first-round exit at the India Open. Teenager Unnati Hooda opens against top seed Chen Yu Fei, while junior world silver medallist Tanvi Sharma faces fourth seed Tomoka Miyazaki. Malvika Bansod will take on sixth seed Michelle Li of Canada.
India’s presence in doubles is limited, with top pairs Satwiksairaj Rankireddy–Chirag Shetty and Treesa Jolly–Gayatri Gopichand opting out. In men’s doubles, Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun will compete in the qualifying rounds.
In mixed doubles, Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde face top seeds Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping, while Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto take on France’s Julien Maio and Lea Palermo, whom they defeated at last year’s Malaysia Masters.
With a demanding draw and strong opposition, the Indonesia Masters presents a stern test for the Indian contingent as they look to rediscover form and confidence in the third consecutive week of top-level competition.
