Since the start of IPL , IPL has witnessed many such occasions where teams captain were changed Mid season. Several times many shocking names of new captains were also announced. Not only this those new captains even lead their respective teams to unprecedented victory in IPL.
Here is the list of all those events where we witnessed the change of captain mid-season for any franchise:

- Kane Williamson replaced David Warner ( Sunrisers Hyderabad ) 2021
This is the most recent occasion where David Warner was replaced by Kane Williamson as the new captain of SRH. Not to forget Warner is the one who led Hyderabad to their maiden IPL title in 2016. He had been very consistent in IPL. But Unfortunately he was having his poor season IPL both as a player and as a captain. SRH lost 5 out of it’s 6 games. So, Kane Williamson who is New Zealand’s captain was handed over the charge by the team management of SRH.

- Mayank Agarwal Replaced KL Rahul ( Punjab Kings) 2021
Recently in IPL 2021 we got the news of KL Rahul getting diagnosed with appendicitis and he was rushed to hospital for a surgery. So Mayank Agarwal was handed over the charge by Punjab Kings management. Mayank Agarwal performed brilliantly on his debut as he smashed 99 runs off just 8 balls. Though he could not lead PBKS to the victory on his captaincy debut.

- Eoin Morgan Replaced Dinesh Kartik ( Kolkata Knight Riders) 2020
Dinesh Kartik stepped down as KKR’s captain and was replaced by Eoin Morgan in 2020. Kartik had a poor season as he was not getting runs with the bat so he was humble enough to hand over his captaincy to World Cup winning captain Eoin Morgan. However Morgan’s captaincy also did not help KKR much. KKR was unable to reach play off in 2020 and was placed at 6th position on the points table.

- Steve Smith Replaced Ajinkya Rahane (Rajasthan Royals) 2019
Rahane retained his captaincy in 2019 as he captained in 2018 as well because Steve Smith faced a ban due to a ball-tampering saga with the national team. But in 2019 as Steve Smith made his return and RR was consistently performing poor, So Rahane was removed from the captaincy and Captaincy was once again handed over to Steve Smith. However team still ended up 7th place in the league standings.

- Shreyas Iyyer Replaced Gautam Gambhir (Delhi Daredevils) 2018
Gautam Gambhir stepped down as Delhi Daredevils captain in 2018 and he handed over his captaincy to 23 years old Shreyas Iyyer. Gautam Gambhir have had a reputation of one of the most successful captain of IPL. He was the one who lead KKR to win IPL trophy 2 times during his captaincy. He was handed over the charge of DD’s captaincy in 2018 but unfortunately he could not performed good. So, Voluntarily he handed over his captaincy to 23 years old Shreyas Iyyer. Iyyer lead his team to 3rd position in IPL 2018.

- Murali Vijay Replaced David Miller ( Kings XI Punjab ) 2016
David Miller was replaced by Murali Vijay in IPL 2016 by KXIP management. Miller lead Punjab was constantly performing poor in 2016. Punjab could win only 1 out of their 6 matches and was eventually sacked by KXIP management and Vijay took the charge.

- Shikhar Dhawan Replaced Darren Sammy (Sunrisers Hyderabad) 2014
Shikhar Dhawan performed exceptionally well in International Cricket during Champions trophy of 2013. He was eventually named as the captain of SRH’s squad in 2013 and he lead the team to play offs. But he failed to do so in 2014 and hence was replaced by Darren Sammy in the mid of season. Two-time T20 World Cup-winning West Indian captain Darren Sammy was named as the new captain by the franchise. Sammy couldn’t change the things much and team ended up finishing 6th in 2014.

- Rohit Sharma Replaced Ricky Ponting ( Mumbai Indians ) 2013
Australian Cricketing legend Ricky Ponting was named as the captain of Mumbai Indians in IPL 2013. Ponting at that point in his career was no longer much influential as per the franchisee’s expectations. He was finally replaced by Rohit Sharma. This was one of the most promising captaincy change in the history of IPL. Rohit Sharma then lead MI to victory in his debut season of 2013. Since then MI has won 5 IPL titles in his captaincy. He is the most successful captain of IPL.

- Virat Kohli Replaced Daniel Vettori ( Royal Challengers Bangalore ) 2012
Daniel Vettori who is New Zealand’s veteran spinner backed off himself from Captaincy and benched himself. Virat Kohli then took charge as the new captain of RCB. This was the captaincy debut for young Virat Kohli who is present day gem and skipper of Indian Cricketing team. Virat Kohli lead RCB finished up at the 5th place in 2012. That was the beginning of new era in cricketing world. Virat has lead RCB to 2 finals in IPL since then.

- Cameron White Replaced Kumar Sangakkara ( Deccan Chargers ) 2012
Kumar Sangakkara who was having a very poor season both as a captain and as a player in 2012. He stepped down himself and handed over his captaincy to Cameron White. But he also couldn’t do much and DC ended at 8th position in the points table in 2012 season of IPL.

- Anil Kumble Replaced Kevin Peterson ( Royal Challengers Bangalore ) 2009
English Legend Kevin Peterson left the IPL in 2009 midway through the tournament. He went for the national duty. So Anil Kumble was handed over the charge of RCB. Under Kumble RCB performed brilliantly and reached to the finals. But unfortunately lost to Deccan Chargers in the Finals.
