IPL 2025: Former New Zealand fast bowler and well-known commentator Danny Morrison has questioned Chennai Super Kings’ poor performance in IPL 2025. With five losses in six matches, Morrison suggested that the team might be relying too much on its older players, and that decision could be hurting their chances this season.
Danny Morrison Questions CSK’s Strategy in IPL 2025
Morrison questioned if CSK’s loyalty to their veteran players, like MS Dhoni and Ravichandran Ashwin, is now costing them. He wondered if these older players still have the drive needed for such a fast-paced and tough tournament.
Danny Morrison said in ESPNCricinfo: “Is there too much of a love affair with those guys that have been there a long time? And I know there’s the nickname of Dad’s Army, and we had that. But how motivated are they? Some guys, R. Ashwin, he’s finished internationally. All of those sorts of things where you still should have a bit to offer. Totally.”
Is CSK Too Loyal to Its Aging Stars?
Morrison added that while Ashwin is a spinner and could still play for some time, the real concern is his motivation. He pointed out that Ashwin, mainly a Test player, ended his international career in Australia earlier this year and maybe not in the way he wanted. Danny Morrison further added:
“So, then we’re going to ask those questions because, you know, opinionated and want to ask why is it not going well?”
Ashwin has taken only five wickets in six matches so far in IPL 2025 for the five-time champions.
Time to Inject Youth Into the Squad?
Danny Morrison, the former New Zealand cricketer, said that top-level cricket is tough, and if a player’s motivation or sharpness drops, the game quickly shows their weaknesses. He believes that’s what’s happening with Chennai Super Kings this season.
Morrison thinks CSK could fall behind if they don’t start bringing in younger players. He feels the team is too focused on their aging stars like MS Dhoni and Ravichandran Ashwin, and that a lack of energy and motivation is hurting their performance in IPL 2025.
