IPL 2025: Digvesh Singh Rathi, a bowler for Lucknow Super Giants, has been fined 25% of his match fee and given one demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Punjab Kings at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday.
Digvesh Singh Rathi admitted to the Level 1 offense under Article 2.5 and accepted the penalty given by the Match Referee. For Level 1 offenses, the Match Referee’s decision is final and cannot be challenged.
The incident happened during the third over of Punjab’s chase, as they were trying to reach the 172-run target set by Lucknow in Match 14 of IPL 2025. On the fifth ball of the over, Rathi got Priyansh Arya to hit a mishit, which was easily caught by Shardul Thakur. However, Rathi’s gesture towards Arya, which seemed like a send-off, was considered inappropriate. This led to him being fined and given a demerit point.

Digvesh Singh Rathi took another wicket in his final spell, dismissing the other opener, Prabhsimran Singh, and breaking the 84-run partnership between him and Shreyas Iyer. Despite these two wickets, Punjab won the match by eight wickets with 22 balls to spare.
It has to be noted that Digvesh’s gesture reminded many of former West Indies pacer Kesrick Williams’ famous celebration, which he would do after dismissing a batter. Williams first used the gesture in 2017 after dismissing Virat Kohli. However, Kohli got his revenge in 2019 when he took Williams to task, responding with the same celebration after smashing him around the ground in Hyderabad.
Following the win, Punjab Kings’ trolled Digvesh Singh Rathi with the iconic notebook celebration from the dugout. Check out the reaction:
