IPL 2025: Riyan Parag Fined For Slow Over-Rate

Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Riyan Parag has been fined 12 lakh Indian rupees for maintaining a slow over-rate during the team’s match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 30, 2025. This fine was imposed by the IPL’s new code of Conduct which regulates over-rate violations.

Riyan Parag Penalized for Over-rate Violation

The Indian Premier League (IPL) issued an official statement confirming the penalty:

“Riyan Parag, Captain, Rajasthan Royals, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 11 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Chennai Super Kings at the ACA Stadium, Guwahati, on 30th March 2025.”

Since this was RR’s first over-rate offense of the season, the fine was limited to ₹12 lakh under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. However, repeated violations could lead to harsher penalties.

Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings Match Summary

Rajasthan Royals secured their first victory of the season after two consecutive defeats. Batting first, RR put up a total of 182/9 with Nitish Rana leading the charge with a blistering 81 off just 36 balls. CSK fought hard in the chase but fell short by six runs.

Riyan Parag Reacts to RR’s First Win

After the match, Parag expressed joy over RR’s maiden victory of the season in the IPL:

Post-game, Riyan Parag said,

“Feels good. Took some time- it was two games, but it felt long. We’ve had two tough games- going for 280 in one and then not being able to defend around 180 in the second. Luckily, we had a few options in this game; Nitish and I were also there. I just did what felt instinctive as a captain today.”

IPL 2025: New Over-rate Rules Explained

The 2025 IPL season introduced stricter rules for slow over-rates, replacing the previous system where captains faced immediate suspension for multiple offenses.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) clarified in its official statement:

“Effective this season, a new Code of Conduct will be implemented from the TATA IPL 2025 season, introducing a demerit points system and suspension points that will remain valid for 36 months.”

Previously, a captain who breached the over-rate rule three times faced an automatic one-match suspension. Now, teams will accumulate demerit points alongside monetary penalties. If a team collects four demerit points, the captain could face more severe sanctions, including a 100% match fee fine or further disciplinary actions.
