KKR vs SRH, IPL 2025: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 80 runs in match 15 of IPL 2025 at Eden Gardens on Thursday, April 3.
KKR had a poor start, losing both openers within the first three overs. However, Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi steadied the innings with an impressive 81-run partnership in 51 balls. SRH fought back by quickly dismissing both set batters. Raghuvanshi played a brilliant knock, scoring 50 off 32 balls with five fours and two sixes.
Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh built a strong 91-run partnership in just 41 balls. Iyer smashed 60 off 29 balls before getting out in the final over, while Rinku remained unbeaten on 32 off 17. KKR posted a total of 200/6 in 20 overs.
In SRH’s chase, Vaibhav Arora struck early, dismissing Travis Head and Ishan Kishan. Harshit Rana sent Abhishek Sharma back as SRH collapsed to 9/3. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Kamindu Mendis tried to recover, but Andre Russell and Sunil Narine removed them.
Heinrich Klaasen (33 off 21) fought back, but Varun Chakaravarthy and Arora took key wickets, including Pat Cummins. SRH was bowled out for 120 in 16.4 overs. Arora and Chakaravarthy took three wickets each, while Russell, Rana, and Narine also contributed.
After the match, SRH captain Pat Cummins spoke to the broadcasters and looked disappointed. He said the target was within reach.
“Not a great time. I think this was gettable, pretty good wicket. Left too many in the field and then fell well short in the end.”
Pat Cummins criticized the SRH batting lineup for the first time, saying they need to set realistic goals since failing in three straight matches is not a good sign.
“We need to be realistic, three games in a row it hasn’t come off for us. We need to maybe look back at whether we could have chosen better options. Our batters are best when they take the game on, but looking back maybe we could have taken different options.”
SRH’s fielding against KKR was poor, and Pat Cummins openly blamed it for the loss.
“(On what went wrong) It was mainly our fielding, overall bowling wasn’t bad. We should have taken a few catches and stopped them a bit earlier.”
Ultimately, Pat Cummins explained why Adam Zampa was not included in the playing XI and shared his plan to recover from the heavy defeat. He said:
“(On Adam Zampa not playing) We only bowled 3 overs of spin, the ball wasn’t gripping for us too. So opted to go without him.”
“(On how he will deal with this loss) I will probably address it on whether we could have used different options, but don’t want to dwell too much on it. We go back to a venue we know so well now.”
During the post-match presentation, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane emphasized the importance of securing a big win against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He said:
“This game was really important for us. WInning by big margin was crucial. Even we wanted to bowl on this wicket. When we lost two early wickets, wanted to consolidate till 6 overs – play with intent but play cricketing shots. And then when we have wickets in hand, guys down the order can get as many runs as possible.”
Ajinkya Rahane was pleased with his team’s batting performance and said they had learned from their past mistakes. He said:
“Happy with the batting unit. Last two games were not upto the mark for us. But we learned a lot from our mistakes. This is a great example for us as a batting unit. Rinku and Venkatesh – those guys can play brilliant shots. Ramandeep was sitting in the dugout, Dre was sitting and Moeen was also ready.”
Ajinkya Rahane shared that their plan was to play steadily for the first 15 overs before going all out in the last five. He also praised the KKR bowlers for their excellent performance in the match. He said:
“It was about playing normal till 15 overs and take it on. Initially we thought 170-180 in the surface would be good. Slower balls were gripping. We had three quality spinners. Moeen, unfortunately, couldn’t bowl tonight. Sunny and Varun bowled really well. Credit goes to Vaibhav and Harshit as well.”
