IPL 2025: Chennai Super Kings are having their worst season ever in the history of the IPL. They’ve lost five matches in a row in the ongoing IPL 2025. Their most recent loss was against the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, and it happened at their home ground in Chennai.
Historic Low: CSK’s Worst-Ever Start to an IPL Season
On Friday, April 11, Chennai Super Kings lost to Kolkata Knight Riders by eight wickets in the 25th match of IPL 2025 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. KKR easily chased down CSK’s target of 104 runs in just 10.1 overs and moved up to third place in the points table.
This was Chennai Super Kings’ biggest defeat ever in IPL history based on balls left, as KKR chased the target with 59 balls to spare. For the first time, CSK has also lost five matches in a row in the IPL.
Surprisingly, they’ve also lost three home games in a row at Chepauk in a single season, something that has never happened before. Batting first, the five-time champions could only score 103 runs for 9 wickets, one of their lowest totals in IPL history.
IPL 2025: CSK Struggle Yet Again With the Bat
Chennai Super Kings’ score of 103 for 9 is now the second-lowest total by any team at Chepauk. The only lower total was Royal Challengers Bangalore’s 70-all out against CSK in 2019. It is also CSK’s second-lowest score ever in the IPL while batting first. Their lowest was 97 all out against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium in the 2022 season.
CSK’s third-lowest first-innings total was 109 all out against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur during IPL 2008. Their fourth lowest was 110 for 8 against Delhi in 2012. On top of that, CSK also set another unwanted record, six of their wickets fell to spin bowlers against KKR, the most ever for them in a single IPL innings.
IPL 2025: Sunil Narine Makes History Against CSK
KKR spinner Sunil Narine has overtaken Harbhajan Singh to become the second-highest wicket-taker against Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, behind only Lasith Malinga. Narine now has 26 wickets against CSK with an impressive economy rate of 6.29.
His spin has regularly troubled CSK batters, especially when turning tracks. After the heavy loss to KKR, CSK dropped to ninth in the points table with just two points, while SRH stayed in tenth place, also with two points.
IPL 2025: MS Dhoni reacts to the embarrassing defeat
After the tough loss at home, skipper MS Dhoni said:
“It has been quite a few nights that have not gone our way. The challenge has been there; we have to accept the challenge. Today, I felt we did not have enough runs on the board.”
It has been the case over there; when we bowled in the 2nd innings, it stopped a bit; today it did in the first innings. When you lose too many wickets, there is pressure, and with quality spinners, it is difficult. We never got any partnerships and a bit more partnerships; an application, and we would be fine.”
