IPL Mega Auction 2025: Top South African Cricketers To Watch Out For

The four-match T20 cricket series between hosts South Africa and India is an opportunity to make their case for some players looking to land lucrative contracts ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction later this month.

More than 1,500 players have registered for 204 spots in the IPL 2025. South Africa leads the foreign contingent with 91 Proteas players registered for the 2025 IPL mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on 24 and 25 November.

Only two South African players, Heinrich Klaasen and Tristan Stubbs, were retained by their IPL franchises. Klaasen re-signed for Sunrisers Hyderabad for $2.73 million becoming the most expensive player in the history of the IPL.

Aiden Markram

The South African skipper was released from SunRisers Hyderabad ahead of the 2025 IPL mega auction and will be hoping to fetch a handsome amount. Markram made an immediate impact for SunRisers Hyderabad in his debut IPL season in 2022 scoring 381 runs, including three half-centuries, in 14 matches. He earned the captaincy of the franchise the following season. 

Markram’s leadership experience at both franchise and international level might make him a favourite during the auction.

Kagiso Rabada

Proteas pacer Rabada was released by the Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. He is the current Test cricket’s No 1 bowler and one could hope for a bidding war for the pace sensation. 

Rabada made his IPL debut in 2017 with the 2020 edition being his most successful season, finishing as the top wicket-taker with 30 scalps for the Delhi Capitals.

David Miller

The South African power hitter made his IPL debut in 2012, establishing himself as a mainstay for the Kings XI Punjab over eight years. His most successful season was in 2022 when he scored 481 runs in 16 matches playing for the Gujarat Titans.

Miller was released by Titans ahead of the IPL mega auction and it remains to be seen which colours he would don in the upcoming season.

Donovan Ferreira

The South African all-rounder  was signed by Rajasthan Royals at the 2023 auction. Ferreira grabbed eyeballs with his sensational debut for the Jo’burg Super Kings in the SA20 in 2023, where he played a match-winning knock of 82 not out from 40 balls. He has amassed a remarkable 1,608 runs from 88 innings so far in his T20 career.

Ottneil Baartman

The South African seamer has been in a phenomenal form over the last two seasons. He was the leading wicket-taker across the two SA20 seasons before making his South Africa and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup debut earlier this year.
