We have seen significant partnerships formed in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on numerous occasions. While not as common or as significant as in ODIs or Tests, they are crucially significant. The Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen many match-winning alliances over the years, with some being regarded as being among the best in T20 cricket. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) players dominate the list of highest wicket-taking partnerships in IPL history, led by team captain Virat Kohli and veteran swashbuckling opening batsman Chris Gayle.

  • AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli (2nd wicket) – 229 runs in 96 balls

Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers are close mates, and their bond has stretched beyond the cricket pitch. The duo holds the world record for the two highest Indian premier league alliances. This one, which tops the list, came 2against a struggling Gujarat Lions offence in 2016. RCB’s batting first lost Chris Gayle early in match 44 of the IPL 2016. But they had no idea what was about to come after them. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers combined for the second wicket and annihilated Gujarat’s bowlers. The pair put on a 229-run stand for the second wicket off just 96 balls, the highest stand for any wicket in T20 cricket overall. Kohli finished with 109 off 55 balls and de Villers with 129* off 52 balls as RCB amassed a massive 248/3 in 20 overs. Gujarat had no chance. This is the most significant Indian premier league alliance in history.

  • Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul (1st wicket) – 210 runs

South African Quinton de Kock and India’s KL Rahul established the highest introductory partnership in Indian Premier League history with 210 runs in a two-run triumph over the Kolkata Knight Riders. De Kock managed to score an undefeated 140 off 70 balls and skipper Rahul managed to score 68 not out of 51 balls to become the first pair in IPL history to bat 20 overs. Their opening stand exceeded the previous record of 185 set by Jonny Bairstow and David Warner for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2019, while De Kock also established the season’s greatest individual score.

  • Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh (2nd wicket) – 206 Runs

On May 17, 2011, Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh teamed up for a catastrophic victory over RCB at the gorgeous Dharamshala stadium. The Australian pair managed to score 206 runs for the second wicket against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, with Gilchrist scoring 106(55) and Marsh collecting 79(55). Both batters took their time before unveiling a barrage of big shots all over the field.  Kings XIs eventually started, but Gilchrist and Marsh quickly started scoring boundaries at a rapid pace, and the pair combined to help Punjab rack up a humongous total of 233 runs. The team’s playoff chances were boosted after they ascended to fifth place in the table with a crushing win over the Kohli-led RCB at the Dharamshala stadium.

  • Virat Kohli vs Chris Gayle (2nd wicket) – 204 Runs

It was the early days of the Challengers, and Virat was just getting started. As the tournament approached its conclusion, the Challengers maintained their dominance over the Mumbai Indians. Despite Dilshan’s early stumble, Gayle and Kohli were too much for Delhi. Gayle took the lead, while Kohli played second fiddle with equal aplomb. The pair combined for 16 fours and 14 sixes. The Challengers were dispersed one boundary after another during Kohli’s knock, while Gayle hammered the bowlers across the ropes as he managed to rack up 13 sixes in the game. The pair went undefeated for 204 runs as RCB amassed 215 runs.
