6 Min Read

Cricket was introduced in Ireland in the 19th century, but the maiden match played by an Ireland team was in 1855. Ireland was elected to Associate membership of the ICC for the first time in 1993. Since then, immense changes have come in the cricket of the Irish nation but now Ireland has become a Full Member team of the ICC and plays all three formats of the game. On June 22, 2017, Ireland got Test playing rights, which made the country the 11th Full Member of the International Cricket Council.

Team Achievements in ODI Format:

The Irish is now in 11th place in the ICC ranking due to recent failures in the ODI Format bilateral series. Ireland won their first bilateral series in 2008 against Kenya. The team’s performance against the associate countries is up to the mark but flunked to perform as per their potential against the established cricketing countries. They have managed to whitewash the opponent in the format only twice, which came against Kenya in 2009 and Zimbabwe in 2019.

Ireland added another feather to their crown when they recorded their iconic victory during the 2018 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier by 226 runs against the UAE. Ireland chased 329/7 in a successful run chase against mighty England at Bangalore during the 2011 Cricket World. It was recorded as the highest successful run chase in a World Cup. Unfortunately, the Irish didn’t have the performance as per their potential in the biggest stage of cricket, the Cricket World Cup, in which they only qualified for the Super 8 stage in the 2007 ICC World Cup.

Ireland Records in T20 Cricket:

Ireland played their maiden T20I match against Scotland in Stormont, Belfast, on August 2, 2008. Since then, Ireland has improved a lot in the shortest version of the game. Ireland has played 128 T20I matches, in which the team secured victory in 52 games while they faced 67 defeats with two ties and seven no results. The Irish has an overall winning percentage of 45.45 in the T20I format.

Team Achievements in T20I Format:

Ireland won their first bilateral series in 2011 against Kenya. Later they secured two more series against Papua New Guinea in 2016 and Zimbabwe in 2021.

The highest score for Ireland in a T20I match was achieved against Afghanistan during the final of the 2013 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier when they scored 225/7. The highest successful chase for Ireland was recorded in the third match of the 2019–20 Ireland Tri-Nation Series against Scotland when they scored 194/6 to win by four wickets. They have recently broken their 13-year drought of qualifying for the T20 World Cup and registered themselves in the main event of the T20I world cup after 2009.

Ireland Records in Test Cricket:

Ireland got the Test playing right in 2017 and became a Full member of the ICC. Ireland played their first-ever Test match against Pakistan in The Village, Malahide, on 11–15 May 2018. The Irish team didn’t play as much red ball format as they have played the shorter formats. In all three test matches against Pakistan, England, and Afghanistan, Ireland has encountered defeat.

Since being an associate member of ICC for the first time to becoming one of the emerging powers of world cricket, Ireland cricket has come a long way. In multination tournaments like the world cup, they have proven themselves as giant killers with back-to-back upsets by defeating the strong teams.
