Ireland became a Full Member of the International Cricket Council in 2017. Before that, they were a part of the International Cricket Council (ICC) as an Associate member (1993). Ireland missed out on an opportunity for qualifying for the 1999 Cricket World Cup narrowly, which was co-hosted by Ireland, Scotland, England, and the Netherlands.
Ireland qualified for the World Cup in 2007 for the first time in their history. Since then, Ireland has qualified for the 2011 and 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup (50 overs) tournaments and the 2010, 2012, and 2014 World Twenty20 competitions.

Ireland gave their best performance in their World Cup tournament debut in 2007. In that tournament, they qualified for the Super-8 stage of the tournament. Irish started their debut campaign in the World Cup with a nail-biting match with Zimbabwe, which resulted in a tie after both teams managed to score 221. They secured their first win in their next game against Pakistan by 3 wickets (D/L method) and knocked Pakistan out of the tournament.
But the team failed to put up an expected performance in the next matches and faced defeat against West Indies in the group stage and England, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and Sri Lanka in the Super 8 stage resulting in their exit from the tournament.
ICC Cricket World Cup 2011:
Ireland didn’t have a very successful run in the World Cup 2011, which was co-hosted by the subcontinental nations- India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Ireland couldn’t advance beyond the first round. But their famous win against England will be remembered by cricket fans forever. Kevin O’Brien smashed the fastest century in the world cup in just 50 balls helping his team to achieve the record of highest successful run chase (327) in the world cup. Ireland’s team secured win another game against Netherlands, which wasn’t enough for the team to qualify for the next round.
ICC Cricket World Cup 2015:
Ireland qualified for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and started their tournament positively with two consecutive wins over West Indies and UAE. Ireland chased down 304 against West Indies and secured their third time win while chasing more than 300 runs in the World Cup. But the Irish failed to win any of the remaining matches except the Zimbabwe game and got knocked out from the group stage.
Ireland didn’t have an exceptionally good time in 50 overs cricket after the 2015 World Cup, but the teams improved sufficiently in their game. The improvement is evident in their performance in the T20 World Cup 2022, but inexperience has been an obstacle to the team. But with the talents in their time, the Irish team can be a cricket powerhouse in the future.
