Isharani Baruah is a professional Indian badminton player from Assam who competes in the women’s singles category. She is currently one of India’s rising talents in the sport, having achieved a career-high world ranking of 48 in January 2026.
Isharani grew up in a middle-class family in Dibrugarh and attended local school in early days. She got inclined towards badminton after Saina Nehwal’s historic bronze medal at the London Olympics in 2012. It was India’s first Olympic medal in badminton.
Indentifying her passion, Ishani’s parents enrolled her at the Dibrugarh District Sports Academy for initial training. However, she faced early challenges in Assam’s resource-constrained environment, where limited facilities and her coach’s small-town setup restricted access to advanced equipment for training.
Isharani began her foray into competitive badminton by playing in several junior-level tournaments where she represented her country. She transitioned to the senior badminton circuit in 2023, building on her junior achievements by making her first appearances in All India Senior Ranking tournaments, where she secured a gold medal at the Yonex Sunrise V V Natu Memorial event in Pune. This marked her entry into professional competition as a women’s singles specialist, competing against established national players.
The shuttler now recieves training at national camps and the Pullela Gopichand Academy, supplemented by sessions at the Centre for Badminton Excellence (formerly Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy) under coach Umendra Rana.
