Italy loses unbeaten streak
Italy lost their first game in three years as Spain beat them 2-1 at San Siro on Wednesday night. Ferran Torres’ first-half brace was enough to take a young Spanish side past Italy. Pellegrini gave the home side some hope after scoring a late goal but Spain held on for the victory. Young Gavi made his debut for the national team.
Spain opened the scoring in the 17th minute after a few exchanges between the two teams. Ferran Torres scored the goal after meeting a cross from Oyarzabal.
A minute later Spain could have doubled their lead after Donnarumma fumbled a strong shot from Marcos Alonso. However, Bonucci was there first to clear the ball away quickly. Meanwhile, Federico Bernadeschi hit the woodwork for the home side in the 33rd minute of the game. Insigne missed a glorious opportunity to equalize as he dragged his shot wide in front of a gaping goal.
In the 42nd minute of the game, Bonucci was sent off after a reckless elbow onto the face of Sergio Busquets. He was already booked earlier in the game. Italy going down to ten men went two goals down in first-half stoppage time as winger Ferran Torres grabbed his second goal of the night. The Man City star headed home from close range from an Oyarzabal cross as he managed to remain unmarked with excellent movement behind the Italian defense.
After another back and forth second half, Pellegrini pulled one back for the Italians late in the game. However, the goal was not enough for the Azzurri to come back in the game, ending their 37 games unbeaten run dating back to 2018.
