2 Min Read

In a thrilling Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, host country Ivory Coast staged a sensational comeback to defeat Nigeria 2-1, securing their third AFCON title and first since 2015. Simon Adingra played a pivotal role, setting up both goals to orchestrate the historic victory.

Nigeria took the lead in the first half with William Troost-Ekong’s opener, putting the hosts on the back foot. However, Ivory Coast rallied in the second half, with Franck Kessie equalizing shortly after the break, thanks to a well-timed header from Adingra’s delivery. The stage was set for a dramatic late winner.

Sebastien Haller, who overcame cancer last year, emerged as the hero for Ivory Coast. In the 81st minute, Adingra’s brilliant dribble past Zaidu Sanusi led to a crucial cross, allowing Haller to score the decisive goal that secured the AFCON title for Ivory Coast.

The home team’s attacking momentum, backed by a passionate crowd, played a significant role throughout the match. Haller’s stretched-out attempt early on and Max Gradel‘s acrobatic strike showcased Ivory Coast’s determination to take control from the beginning.

Despite a setback in the group stages with a 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast’s remarkable turnaround culminated in a historic triumph. The victory marks their resilience and determination to overcome challenges, making them the champions of Africa once again.
