Janja Garnbret made a comeback with a bang! Returning from a nine-month hiatus, the two time Olympic champion clinched a boulder-lead golden double at the IFSC Innsbruck World Cup on 29 June.
This was Garnbret’s fourth golden double, adding to her 2021, 2023 and 2024 milestones.
The 26-year-old is only two victories away from a half-century of career World Cup victories.
Garnbret last appeared at the Koper World Cup in September 2024. However, the break did not dampen the spirit of the Slovenian climber who registered victory with a score of 41 points.
“I am really tired after three days of climbing, but at the same time, I am so happy. I came back and climbed the way I wanted to,” Janja Garnbret told the IFSC afterwards.
“I love Innsbruck. That is why I chose this competition for my comeback after an Olympic year.”
Italy’s Laura Rogora finished second as set the standard with 33 before Garnbret walked up to the wall.
Great Britain’s Erin McNeice, who has been the form lead climber this season with two World Cup victories, had to settle with third place with 32+.
The men’s competition served up some drama drama with five athletes topping out the route, which meant the winner would be determined on countback.
Alberto Ginés López of Spain moved into the lead thanks to his fifth-place finish in the semi-finals, with Yoshida Satone and Yannick Flohé moving into second and third after they also topped the route.
Olympic combined champion Toby Roberts, who won the boulder title earlier this week, was the second last climber onto the wall and needed a top for a guaranteed medal. Roberts had some nervous moments before securing the final clip.
Suzuki Neo navigated the route without seamlessly to claim his first World Cup victory after winning silver in Wujiang in April. Roberts finished second with Yoshida rounding out the podium.
